Haiti Reconnected September 2010

IndiComm Global Limited, a specialist in the field of Submarine Cable connectivity around the world is proud to have won the contract to reconnect Haiti to the BDSNi (Bahamas Domestic Submarine Network) This is a fibre optic submarine communications cable system that links the Islands of the Bahamas, and also provides connectivity to Haiti via a spur connection in Matthew Town, Inagua,Bahamas.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was catastrophic at magnitude 7.0 Mw , with an Epi-centre near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake; the Haitian Government reported that an estimated 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. They also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.

Amongst the widespread devastation and disruption throughout Port-au-Prince and elsewhere, vital infrastructure necessary to respond to the disaster was severely damaged or destroyed. This included all hospitals in the capital; air, sea, and land transport facilities; and communication systems in the main, the BDSN submarine cable facility itself was completely destroyed.

IndiComm Global was officially contracted on the 02nd July 2010 to reconnect the BDSNi cable from a new location some 3 kilometers from the original facility; after an initial survey in July 2010, installations began on the 15th August 2010 and was completed on 8th Sept 2010, the actual reconnection of the system to Mathew Town, Bahamas, took place on the 1st Sept 2010 @21:41hrs GMT.

After the confidence trials and stability tests were completed the cable was handed over to BTC (Bahamas Telecommunications Company) officially on the 9th Sept 2010 ready to accept traffic;
